Sophia Gomm was the daughter of Granville and Isabella Penn. She was the great granddaughter of William Penn (the founder of Pennsylvania, USA). She grew up at Stoke Park, Stoke Poges. In 1817 she became the first wife of Field Marshal Sir William Gomm of the Coldstream Guards. She died in 1827. His horse used at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815 and retired to the parkland of Stoke Park estate and buried near St Giles’ church.
