Colonel George Charles Ernest Adolphus Richard HOWARD-VYSE was born in 1812. He was the eldest of ten children of Major General Richard and Frances Howard-Vyse of Stoke Place, Stoke Poges. He followed in the family tradition by serving in the army. His grandfather was General Richard Vyse and his great grandfather was Field Marshal Sir George Howard. He rose to Colonel and was the Commanding Officer of the 2nd Regiment of the Life Guards: the ‘Royals’.

In 1839 George married Elizabeth Culme Seymour, the sixth daughter of Admiral Sir Michael Seymour. His father disapproved of the marriage and as a result of this George was disinherited. Their courtship had gone on for several years and correspondence between father and son with letters going abroad had gone on for years with no parties being agreeable. They lived in Old Windsor. George died in 1890 and Lizzy died in 1892.
Lizzy published a book about her experiences of travelling in North Africa and Europe. It was published in 1882 and was quite a popular travel book.
The Howard-Vyse family home of Stoke Place, Stoke Poges was inherited by George’s brother, Richard Henry who was a Colonel in the Royal Horse Guards: the ‘Blues’.
